Ear surgery for children and teenagers
Ear surgery (otoplasty) for children and teenagers is becoming an increasingly common option when it comes to aesthetic changes that can boost self-confidence. If your child has ears that stick out too much, or if they feel insecure about their appearance for any reason, otoplasty might be the answer. Children and teenagers are the most common candidates for this procedure, and when performed by experienced professionals, it is a safe and effective procedure.
Whether it's correcting ears that naturally protrude or restoring the shape of ears after an injury, otoplasty is a procedure that is performed quickly with minimal recovery. Our clinic specializes in plastic surgery and offers the latest techniques that guarantee excellent results.
Otoplasty is a surgical procedure that corrects the shape, size, or position of the ears. It is most commonly used to reduce the visibility of ears that stick out, and in some cases, it can also be used to restore ears that are underdeveloped (a condition known as microtia).
In most cases, parents decide to opt for otoplasty for their children when they notice that their child has ears that stick out, which can lead to insecurity and teasing by peers. Often, this happens before the child becomes aware of their appearance, around the age of seven, although many teenagers decide to undergo this procedure to improve their appearance and self-confidence.
When is the best time for the surgery?
The ideal time for otoplasty is around the age of seven, when the ears stop growing, but the procedure can also be performed later as long as the conditions are favorable. Otoplasty can be done for teenagers and adults, but younger patients benefit from the fact that their skin and cartilage are not fully developed, which makes the correction of the ear shape easier.
Ear surgery is safe for both children and adults, but in childhood, general anesthesia is often used, while teenagers and adults can be under local anesthesia.
How does the otoplasty procedure look?
Otoplasty is a relatively quick procedure. It usually takes about 45 minutes per ear, or up to 90 minutes for both ears. The procedure starts with making a small incision behind the ear or under its edge, which ensures that the scars remain hidden. Depending on the necessary correction, the surgeon may change the shape of the cartilage, bend it in the proper way, and secure it with sutures. The incisions are then closed with absorbable stitches, which means that there is no need to remove the stitches later.
Recovery after the surgery
After the surgery, the bandage is usually removed after 4-5 days, while a headband may only be needed during sleep to keep the ears in place during recovery. For patients with long hair, such as girls, the ears can be hidden, and recovery can be quicker. For those with short hair, bruising and swelling may last up to two weeks, but patients generally return to their normal activities fairly quickly.
Who are the candidates for otoplasty?
Children and teenagers who have ears that stick out too much or that are not developing properly are the most common candidates for this surgery. Otoplasty is suitable for anyone who feels insecure about their appearance, regardless of age. In addition, children under the age of 7 can benefit from this procedure, as it will be performed before insecurity becomes a problem in the child’s social life.
Otoplasty is safe for both young and adult patients, and it is often performed with a very quick recovery.
