How Does a Deviated Septum Affect Breathing?

When the nasal septum is not properly aligned, airflow through the nose becomes restricted. This means the body must work harder to obtain enough air during breathing, which can lead to several symptoms. In addition to difficulty breathing, people with a deviated septum may notice:

Postoperative Recovery

During the first 24 to 48 hours after surgery, the patient remains in the hospital, and nasal tampons are placed in the nose to help keep the nasal passages open and allow partial breathing. These tampons are removed a few days after surgery.

Once the tampons are removed, patients can gradually return to normal life, although they are advised to avoid physical exertion and strenuous activities. While the nose may appear slightly swollen in the postoperative period, bruising is uncommon, and breathing problems usually improve significantly after the tampons are removed.

Since the nose is very sensitive during this period, patients are usually advised to stay away from work or social environments for about 10 to 14 days to ensure full recovery.
