Have you ever wondered what it would be like to breathe fully without the constant feeling of congestion? For many, a crooked nasal septum isn’t just an aesthetic detail or an incidental diagnosis, but an everyday obstacle that leads to chronic fatigue, headaches, and sleepless nights.
Nasal septum surgery
Breathing problems are one of the most common reasons why people seek medical help. Although some breathing difficulties can be temporary and caused by a cold or allergies, long-term breathing difficulties, especially through the nose, may indicate a more serious structural problem. One of the most common causes of long-term breathing difficulties is a deviated septum, commonly referred to as a crooked nasal septum. This medical condition can significantly affect quality of life, but effective treatments are available, including surgery that can permanently resolve these issues.
What Is a Deviated Septum?
The nasal septum is the structure inside the nose that divides the nasal cavity into two passages, allowing air to flow freely through both nostrils. However, in people with a deviated septum, this structure is not positioned correctly and is displaced from its natural position. This can lead to difficulty breathing, frequent sinus infections, and sometimes sleep problems such as sleep apnea.
A deviated septum can be congenital, meaning it is present at birth, or it can occur as a result of an injury, such as a blow to the nose during sports activities or traffic accidents. In cases where the condition is not recognized or treated, symptoms may worsen over time. Some people with this condition do not experience significant breathing problems until later in life, while others notice symptoms immediately.
How Does a Deviated Septum Affect Breathing?
When the nasal septum is not properly aligned, airflow through the nose becomes restricted. This means the body must work harder to obtain enough air during breathing, which can lead to several symptoms. In addition to difficulty breathing, people with a deviated septum may notice:
-
Nasal congestion that persists for a long time or frequently returns
-
Increased nasal discharge (nasal mucus)
-
Dry cough or throat irritation due to constant mouth breathing
-
Frequent sinus infections caused by poor nasal ventilation
For many people, these problems become noticeable during puberty or later in life, although symptoms can appear earlier. Without proper diagnosis and treatment, symptoms can significantly affect quality of life. The most effective way to resolve this issue is surgery.
When Is Nasal Septum Surgery Necessary?
Surgery to correct a deviated septum, known as septoplasty, is the only permanent treatment for this condition. Medications and other therapies may temporarily relieve symptoms but do not correct the underlying problem. Septoplasty is usually not recommended before the age of 18, as the nose continues to grow and develop during adolescence. However, in cases where the deviation is severe and breathing problems become unbearable, surgery may be performed at a younger age.
Once the nose has reached stable growth and development, the surgery is considered safe and highly effective. The procedure involves correcting the position of the nasal septum and restoring it to its natural alignment, allowing normal airflow through the nose. This operation is usually performed under general anesthesia, and patients can return to their normal daily activities after several days of recovery.
Preparation for Surgery
Before deciding on septoplasty, patients need to undergo several medical examinations. These typically include an internal medicine examination, ECG, laboratory tests, a nose and throat swab, and a chest X-ray. These tests are performed to determine whether there are any contraindications for surgery or anesthesia. It is important that all results are recent (not older than seven days). If the tests are performed outside the facility where the surgery will take place, they must be presented to the medical team for review.
Postoperative Recovery
Recovery after septoplasty usually takes about two weeks. During the first 24 to 48 hours after surgery, the patient remains in the hospital, and nasal tampons are placed in the nose to help keep the nasal passages open and allow partial breathing. These tampons are removed a few days after surgery.
Once the tampons are removed, patients can gradually return to normal life, although they are advised to avoid physical exertion and strenuous activities. While the nose may appear slightly swollen in the postoperative period, bruising is uncommon, and breathing problems usually improve significantly after the tampons are removed.
Since the nose is very sensitive during this period, patients are usually advised to stay away from work or social environments for about 10 to 14 days to ensure full recovery.
