FAQ

Exploratory curettage is a surgical procedure in which the inner layer of the uterus (endometrium) is scraped in order to diagnose and treat abnormal bleeding, miscarriage or other problems with the uterus.< /p>

This procedure is usually performed to investigate unclear causes of abnormal vaginal bleeding, after a miscarriage, or to diagnose or treat abnormalities in the endometrium, such as polyps or hyperplasia.

Indications include abnormal vaginal bleeding, infertility, postpartum or postabortive bleeding, uterine polyps, suspected endometrial cancer, or unclear diagnoses related to menstruation.

The procedure is usually performed under local or general anesthesia. The doctor uses instruments to carefully remove tissue from the inner surface of the uterus, which is then sent for histological examination.

Also, depending on the type of anesthesia, you may feel discomfort during curettage, but usually it should not be painful. In the case of local anesthesia, only a slight pressure will be felt. After the procedure, pain or cramping may be present.

Like any surgical procedure, exploratory curettage carries certain risks, including infection, bleeding, uterine perforation, or endometrial scarring that can affect fertility.

It is mandatory to fast several hours before the procedure, if general anesthesia is planned. The doctor will explain all the details of the preparation, including the discontinuation of certain medications, such as anticoagulants.

The results of histological analysis of the taken tissue are usually available in a few days. The doctor will inform you about the findings and possible further therapy.

Most women can get pregnant after the procedure. However, if there were complications or if a large part of the tissue was removed, there is a lower risk of fertility problems.

Yes, follow-up examinations are mandatory to check the condition of the uterus, as well as whether the tissue has been removed completely and whether all problems have been resolved. It is also necessary to monitor the patient's recovery and health.

Recovery usually takes a few days to a week, and most women can return to their normal activities in about 1-2 weeks. During that period, heavy physical activities and sexual relations should be avoided.

Most women experience the return of menstruation within a few weeks after the procedure. In some cases, the cycle may be more irregular for several months.

There is a risk of infection, as after any surgical intervention. To reduce the risk, it is important to follow the post-operative care instructions and see your doctor regularly if signs of infection (redness, swelling, fever) appear.

Exploratory curettage is usually not performed during pregnancy unless there is a spontaneous abortion, when residual products of pregnancy are removed from the uterus.

There is a possibility of scarring on the inner lining of the uterus, which can affect fertility, especially if the curettage is performed more than once or if a large part of the tissue is removed.< /p>

Exploratory curettage is used as a last resort when other diagnostic methods, such as ultrasound, biopsy or endometrial examination, have not provided clear answers. It is an invasive procedure that is usually performed when it is considered necessary to investigate the state of the uterus in more detail.
